Space Heater Safety: Statesville Fire Department Fire Safety Tip of the Month

Last Updated 1/29/2026Posted in Fire News

As the weather cools down, many of us turn to space heaters for a little extra warmth. While they’re convenient and effective, space heaters are also one of the leading causes of home heating fires - especially during the fall and winter months.

The Statesville Fire Department wants to help you stay warm and safe this season with a few simple guidelines for space heater safety.

Top Space Heater Safety Tips

✅ Keep it 3 feet away

Maintain a minimum 3-foot clearance around all sides of your space heater. Keep it away from curtains, furniture, bedding, and anything else that can burn.

✅ Turn it off when unattended

Always turn off space heaters when leaving the room or going to sleep. Never leave them running unattended.

✅ Plug it directly into a wall outlet

Avoid using extension cords or power strips, which can overheat. Always plug your heater directly into a wall outlet.

✅ Place it on a level, nonflammable surface

Set heaters on a flat, stable surface - never on furniture, carpet, or rugs.

✅ Check for safety certifications

Only use heaters that have been tested and certified by a recognized safety testing laboratory (look for UL, ETL, or CSA marks).

✅ Inspect before use

Check the cord and plug for signs of wear or damage. If the heater sparks, smells, or shuts off unexpectedly, discontinue use and replace it.

✅ Use models with auto shut-off

Choose a unit with automatic shut-off features for overheating or tip-over protection.
