Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarms

“Smoke Alarms and Exit Drills in the Home...A Plan You Can Live With”

Carbon monoxide and smoke alarms are two of the most important safety devices in any home. These simple, affordable tools provide early warning when fire or dangerous carbon monoxide is present, giving you and your family valuable time to respond.

Working alarms save lives - and making sure they are properly installed and maintained is one of the easiest ways to protect your household.

Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives!

Proper installation and regular maintenance are essential to ensure your smoke alarms work when you need them most. Simply having an alarm in your home isn’t enough - it must be correctly placed, tested routinely, and replaced when necessary.

Follow the guidelines below to help make sure your smoke alarms are ready to provide early warning in the event of a fire.

Install at least one alarm on each level of your home. It is recommended to have one in each sleeping area and outside of sleeping areas.
Test all smoke alarms, battery powered and hard-wired, once a month. Vacuum or dust around the alarms regularly to keep them clean.
Change batteries once a year unless you have a 10-year battery operated alarm. Make sure you change the backup batteries in your hard- wired alarms once a year as well.
Replace all smoke alarms when they expire after 10 years. You may need to contact a qualified electrician to replace hard-wired alarms.
