Car Seat Check Program

“Right Seat. Right Fit. Real Help.”

Keeping children safe on the road starts with proper car seat use.

Car seats and booster seats are designed to protect children in the event of a crash, but they must be installed and adjusted correctly to be effective. Even small mistakes can reduce how well a car seat protects a child.

The Statesville Fire Department is committed to helping families travel safely by offering free car seat safety checks conducted by trained staff.

Why Car Seat Safety Matters

Motor vehicle crashes remain a leading cause of injury for children. Properly installed and correctly used car seats significantly reduce the risk of serious injury or death. Because car seats vary by age, weight, height, and vehicle type, it’s common for parents and caregivers to have questions - and that’s where we can help.

A car seat check provides peace of mind by ensuring your child’s seat is:

  • Installed correctly in your vehicle
  • Appropriate for your child’s age, weight, and height
  • Properly adjusted for maximum protection

Top Car Seat Safety Tips

  • Always use a car seat or booster seat that is appropriate for your child’s size and age
  • Follow both the car seat manufacturer’s instructions and your vehicle owner’s manual
  • Ensure the seat is tightly secured and does not move more than one inch side to side
  • Check harness straps for proper fit and placement
  • Never rush installation - taking time to do it correctly matters

ABOUT THE APPOINTMENT

  • SFD has a limited number of trained CPSTs that will gladly assist you by appointment only.
  • Certified CPSTs are trained to teach you how to install your car seat, not install it for you. Please be prepared to learn.
  • If you are expecting, try to schedule an appointment several weeks prior to your baby's due date just in case you deliver early.
  • If your child is already born, know your child's weight and height.
  • Please attempt to install the seat in your vehicle before your car seat checkup appointment.
  • Appointments typically take 30 minutes, depending on the car seat and the vehicle; however, the technician should take all the time necessary to ensure that you feel competent and confident in re-securing the car seat into the vehicle and re-buckling your child into the car seat on your own.

What to Bring to your Appointment (Having these items allows our team to confirm the seat is the correct fit and properly adjusted for your child.)

To ensure the most accurate and helpful check, please bring:

    • Your child
    • The car seat you are using
    • The car seat instruction manual (if available)
    • Vehicle owner's manual (if available)
