Statesville Fire Department Announces Command Staff and Officer Promotions

STATESVILLE, NC – The Statesville Fire Department is proud to announce a series of promotions within its command staff and officer ranks. These promotions will take effect January 5, 2026, and reflect the department’s continued commitment to leadership development, operational excellence, and service to the community.

Aaron Kennedy Promoted to Operations Deputy Chief

Chief Aaron Kennedy has been promoted from Battalion Chief to Operations Deputy Chief. Chief Kennedy was hired in May 2011 and has steadily advanced through the ranks, being promoted to Lieutenant in September 2016, Captain in July 2019, and Battalion Chief in February 2023.

As Operations Deputy Chief, Kennedy will oversee the department’s daily operations and lead efforts to ensure goals are achieved efficiently and effectively. His responsibilities include managing emergency response operations, ensuring resources are deployed quickly and appropriately to protect life and property, developing operational plans and procedures, and maintaining departmental safety standards. He will also play a key role in community engagement, budget and resource management, incident reviews, and ongoing safety evaluations to support continuous improvement and regulatory compliance.

Fire Chief Glenn Kurfees said, “Chief Kennedy has been a great asset in every position he’s held, showing strong leadership and dedication to our department. His excellent skills and inspiring nature will help the administrative team work more effectively together and generate new ideas. We are confident his knowledge and passion will continue to benefit both the department and the community.”

Brandon Wiggins Promoted to Battalion Chief

Captain Brandon Wiggins has been promoted to Battalion Chief. Chief Wiggins was hired in May 2011, promoted to Lieutenant in September 2016, and advanced to Captain in July 2019.

As Battalion Chief, Wiggins will manage daily operations and emergency responses for his assigned shift, overseeing four fire stations that include four engine companies and one ladder company, as well as hazmat and rescue responses. He will serve as incident commander during emergency incidents, ensuring effective coordination and appropriate resource deployment. His role also includes personnel management and evaluation of approximately 25 team members, maintaining training readiness, and ensuring safe and effective operations while maintaining open communication with the community.

Chief Kurfees stated, “Chief Wiggins has consistently been part of the team, showcasing his leadership and dedication. His capabilities will enhance the department’s ability to work together efficiently and foster creativity, keeping the department moving forward.”

Zach Hinson Promoted to Captain

Lieutenant Zach Hinson has been promoted from Senior Lieutenant to Captain. Captain Hinson was hired in January 2018, promoted to Lieutenant in June 2022, and to Senior Lieutenant in June 2025.

In his new role, Captain Hinson will lead a crew of five firefighters in daily operations and emergency situations. His responsibilities include ensuring the crew is well-trained, maintaining safety standards, overseeing equipment readiness, and managing communication within the team and with the community to support effective and timely emergency responses.

Chief Kurfees said, “Captain Hinson has shown outstanding leadership and dedication in his current role. I’m confident he’ll continue to motivate and lead his crew effectively. His expertise and passion for service ensure that our community is in capable hands.”

Richard Gregory Promoted to Lieutenant

Senior Firefighter Richard Gregory has been promoted to Lieutenant. Lieutenant Gregory was hired in January 2019 and promoted to Senior Firefighter in September 2023.

As a Fire Lieutenant, Gregory will be responsible for driving and maintaining fire apparatus to ensure it is always ready for emergency response. In addition, he will step in to lead the team and manage operations in the Captain’s absence, ensuring effective emergency response and maintaining high safety standards. His role is critical to keeping daily operations running smoothly and protecting the community.

Fire Chief Glenn Kurfees said, “Lieutenant Gregory’s hard work and skills have greatly benefited our department. I am confident he will do an excellent job in his new role. His dedication to our mission helps keep our community safe and strong.”
