Statesville Fire Department Competes in NCAHMR Hazmat Challenge

The Statesville Fire Department showcased their expertise in hazardous materials response as they participated in the annual North Carolina Association of Hazardous Materials Responders (NCAHMR) Hazmat Challenge on Friday, August 11, 2023, in Raleigh, NC. The team's performance culminated in a commendable 4th place finish out of a field of 9 competitive teams.

Led by Captain Eddy Harpe and Captain Matt Thompson, along with the skilled teamwork of Firefighter Travis Akins and Firefighter Richard Gregory, the team proved their determination in this rigorous competition. The event consisted of both written and hands-on practical challenges, where the participants had to demonstrate their knowledge and capability in dealing with hazardous materials scenarios.

The competition included a diverse range of hazardous material situations, testing the team's ability to think on their feet and make swift, informed decisions. The dedication and training that these firefighters have invested were on full display as they tackled these challenges head-on.

Out of the nine teams that participated in the NCAHMR Hazmat Challenge, the Statesville Fire Department's team secured an impressive 4th place finish. This achievement reflects their dedication, preparation, and the high level of expertise they possess in handling hazardous materials incidents. Their performance reinforces their commitment to serving and protecting the citizens of Statesville effectively.
