Winter Home Safety: Preparing for Spring Storms & Flooding

Last Updated 2/19/2026Posted in Fire News, Community Risk Reduction (January - March)

As winter begins to transition into spring, weather in North Carolina can become unpredictable. March often brings heavy rain, strong winds, thunderstorms, and the potential for localized flooding. Preparing now helps protect your home and family before severe weather arrives.

As part of our Community Risk Reduction efforts, the Statesville Fire Department encourages residents to take proactive steps this month to reduce storm-related risks.

Here are four ways to prepare for spring weather in Statesville:

Understand Flood Risks in Our Area

Heavy rainfall over a short period of time can overwhelm drainage systems, creeks, and low-lying areas. Even areas that do not typically flood can experience water accumulation during severe storms.

Flood Safety Reminders:

  • Never drive through flooded roadways - Turn Around, Don’t Drown.
  • Just a few inches of moving water can sweep a vehicle off the road.
  • Avoid walking through standing water, which may hide debris or downed power lines.
  • Monitor local weather alerts during heavy rain events.

Knowing your surroundings and staying alert during storms can help prevent dangerous situations.

Prepare Your Home Before Severe Weather Hits

A little preparation before storm season can prevent costly damage and reduce safety hazards.

Storm Readiness Checklist:

  • Clear gutters and downspouts to help direct water away from your home.
  • Secure outdoor furniture, grills, and loose items before storms.
  • Trim tree limbs that could fall during high winds.
  • Make sure sump pumps (if applicable) are working properly.
  • Review your homeowner’s insurance policy for flood coverage information.

Taking action before storms develop is far safer than trying to respond during severe conditions.

Stay Weather Aware

Spring storms in North Carolina can develop quickly. Having multiple ways to receive alerts is critical.

Stay Informed By:

  • Enabling emergency alerts on your mobile phone.
  • Monitoring local weather forecasts during severe weather outlooks.
  • Identifying a safe interior room in your home for high wind or tornado warnings.
  • Charging phones and backup batteries when storms are predicted.

Weather awareness allows you to make informed decisions and act quickly if conditions change.

Refresh Your Emergency Kit & Family Plan

March is a great time to review and update your household emergency kit and safety plans.

Your Kit Should Include:

  • Flashlights and extra batteries
  • Bottled water and non-perishable food
  • First aid supplies
  • Necessary medications
  • Important documents stored in a waterproof container

Also review your family communication plan:

  • Where will you meet if separated?
  • Who is your out-of-area contact?
  • Do all family members know emergency phone numbers?

Preparation reduces stress and improves safety during fast-moving weather events.

Spring Preparedness Starts Now

While winter heating risks may begin to decrease, storm-related hazards increase as we move into spring. In Statesville and throughout North Carolina, heavy rain, strong winds, and severe storms are a seasonal reality.

Community Risk Reduction is about taking small, proactive steps before emergencies happen. By preparing your home, staying informed, and reviewing your emergency plans, you help create a safer community for everyone.

The Statesville Fire Department encourages residents to use this month as an opportunity to refresh, review, and prepare.

Being ready today helps protect your family tomorrow.
