July is National Grilling Month, and there’s no better time to enjoy the sizzle of summer cookouts with family and friends. Whether you're perfecting your ribs recipe or trying grilled veggies for the first time, safety should always be the main ingredient. The Statesville Fire Department wants to help you grill smarter and safer this season.

Before you light up, take a moment to check your grill. Built-up grease and leftover food particles can ignite unexpectedly and cause flare-ups or even full-blown grease fires. Regularly clean the grates and trays to keep your cookout under control.Grill Outdoors, Always
Grilling should always be done outside and in a well-ventilated space.
Grills can produce carbon monoxide, a deadly gas that builds up quickly in enclosed areas.
Make sure your grill is set up away from overhangs, garages, and any flammable materials like deck railings or tree branches.
Never Leave a Hot Grill Unattended
Grilling distractions can lead to danger fast. Stay nearby while cooking and keep kids and pets at least 3 feet away. A little space keeps everyone safe and your food just right. If you’re using a charcoal grill, allow the coals to cool completely before disposal.
Use a metal container for ash and coals and never dump them near dry grass or trash cans where they could reignite.
