Burn Awareness Week: Small Actions That Prevent Serious Injuries

Last Updated 2/2/2026Posted in Fire News

Burn Awareness Week is a national effort to educate families, workplaces, and communities about the dangers of burn injuries - and, more importantly, how to prevent them. Burns can happen quickly and unexpectedly, but the good news is that most burn injuries are preventable with simple safety steps. This week, the Statesville Fire Department is sharing practical tips to help keep you and your loved ones safe at home, at work, and in school.

What Is Burn Awareness Week?

Burn Awareness Week is observed each year to bring attention to the most common causes of burn injuries and the steps we can all take to reduce risk. Burns don’t just happen during fires - many occur during everyday activities.

Common causes of burns include:

  • Hot liquids and steam
  • Cooking surfaces and appliances
  • Electrical cords and outlets
  • Chemicals and household cleaners
  • Candles and space heaters

Whether it’s a spilled cup of coffee or a pot left unattended on the stove, these everyday hazards can lead to serious injuries - especially for children and older adults. Awareness is the first step toward prevention, and small changes can make a big difference.

Preventing Common Burns at Home

A few simple habits can significantly reduce the risk of burns in your home:

  • Turn pot handles inward while cooking to prevent spills and tip-overs
  • Keep children at least three feet away from hot surfaces, stoves, and heaters
  • Set water heaters to 120°F or lower to prevent scalds
  • Never leave candles or space heaters unattended
  • Test smoke alarms monthly to ensure they’re working properly

Burn prevention starts with awareness and consistency. Taking these steps every day helps protect everyone in your household.

Burn First Aid Basics: What To Do If a Burn Happens

Even with prevention, accidents can still occur. Knowing basic burn first aid can help reduce pain and support proper healing.

If a burn happens:

✔ Run cool (not cold) water over the burn for about 10 minutes

✔ Cover the burn loosely with a clean, dry bandage

❌ Do not pop blisters

❌ Do not apply butter, toothpaste, or home remedies

🚑 Seek medical attention if the burn is large, deep, or located on the face, hands, feet, or joints.

A few minutes of knowledge can make a lasting difference in recovery.

Working Together for a Safer Community

Burn Awareness Week is a reminder that safety starts with everyday choices. By learning the risks, practicing prevention, and knowing how to respond, we can reduce burn injuries and keep our community safer.

Small actions. Safer communities.
