Statesville Fire Department Conducts Pool Survival Training

Last Updated 4/13/2026Posted in Fire News

Statesville Fire Department crews recently took part in pool survival training at the Statesville Leisure Pool at the Statesville Recreation Center, preparing for a scenario that firefighters hope never happens but must be ready for at any time.

During the training, firefighters entered the water wearing full personal protective equipment and self-contained breathing apparatus. The goal was to practice how to react and the actions needed to survive if they accidentally fall into a pool or other body of water while operating on a call.

This training was developed following a real incident several years ago when a Statesville Fire Captain fell into a pool while performing a 360 assessment of a structure fire. That experience highlighted the need for firefighters to be prepared for unexpected hazards, including water hazards, while in full gear.

While the training may look fun, especially on a warm day, it serves a critical purpose. Firefighters learn techniques to stay afloat, manage their equipment, and safely remove themselves from the water while wearing gear that is not designed for swimming.

Training like this ensures that crews are prepared for a wide range of situations and reinforces the department’s commitment to safety, readiness, and continuous improvement.
