Hurricane Preparedness Week: Why Statesville Residents Should Prepare Now

Last Updated 5/5/2026Posted in Fire News

Hurricane season officially begins June 1, but preparation should start long before the first storm forms. During National Hurricane Preparedness Week (May 3–9, 2026), the Statesville Fire Department encourages all residents to take simple steps now that can make a big difference later.

While Statesville is not located on the coast, hurricanes and tropical systems can still bring heavy rainfall, flooding, strong winds, and power outages to our area. Being prepared ahead of time helps protect your family, your property, and your community.

Know Your Risk: Water & Wind

Even inland communities like Statesville face serious risks from hurricanes - especially flooding from heavy rain and damaging winds.

Flash flooding can occur quickly in low-lying areas, near creeks, and in neighborhoods with poor drainage. Strong winds can bring down trees and power lines, causing outages and blocked roads.

What to do:

  • Know if your home is in a flood-prone area
  • Identify nearby waterways that could overflow
  • Be aware of trees or structures that could be impacted by high winds
  • Identify your home's structural risks (mobile homes & basements can be especially vulnerable)

Prepare Before Hurricane Season

The best time to prepare is before a storm is on the radar.

Waiting until the last minute can leave you scrambling for supplies or information.

Take these steps now:

  • Build or refresh your emergency kit (water, food, medications, batteries). Learn more on building an emergency kit here.
  • Review your insurance coverage.
  • Trim trees and secure outdoor items.
  • Make a family emergency plan, including communication.

Understand Forecast Information

Forecasts have improved significantly, but it’s important to understand what they mean so you can respond appropriately.

Key terms to know:

  • Watch: Conditions are possible
  • Warning: Conditions are expected

Focus on potential impacts, regardless of storm size or category. Pay attention to trusted sources like the National Weather Service and local emergency updates.

Get Moving When a Storm Threatens

When a storm is approaching, timing matters. Acting early can keep you safe and reduce stress.

Be ready to:

  • Secure your home and outdoor items
  • Charge devices and fuel vehicles
  • Follow guidance from local officials
  • Evacuate if ever directed (even inland areas may be affected by flooding)

Stay Protected During Storms

When severe weather hits, your safest option is to stay inside and away from danger.

During the storm:

  • Stay indoors and away from windows
  • Have a way to get weather alerts and forecast updates
  • An interior room without windows is the safest place you can be in a building.
  • Avoid using electrical appliances during lightning
  • Never drive through flooded roadways

Use Caution After Storms

The danger doesn’t end when the storm passes. Hazards often remain in the aftermath.

Be cautious of:

  • Downed power lines
  • Flooded roads and hidden debris
  • Carbon monoxide risks from generators
  • Unstable trees or structures

If you encounter an emergency, call 911.

Take Action Today

Preparedness doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Small steps taken now can have a big impact later.

Start by:

  • Talking with your family about your plan
  • Checking your emergency supplies
  • Staying informed throughout hurricane season

The Statesville Fire Department is committed to keeping our community safe - but preparedness starts with each of us.

Preparedness doesn’t have to be overwhelming - but it does need to start somewhere. Small steps taken now can make a meaningful difference when severe weather impacts our area.

Stay informed. Stay prepared. Stay safe, Statesville.
