Our elementary fire safety resources build on foundational fire and life safety knowledge while encouraging students to take an active role in staying safe.
Through engaging, age-appropriate lessons, students learn how to recognize hazards, respond appropriately during emergencies, and practice safety habits at home, at school, and in the community.
At the City of Statesville Fire Department, our Fire and Life Safety Educators (FLSE) deliver dynamic, in-person fire safety lessons to 4th grade students from September through May.
What Students Learn
Our curriculum aligns with grade-level standards and covers essential fire and life safety topics, including school fire drills, the history and science of fire, home heating and cooking safety, burn prevention, and holiday hazards. Lessons are designed to encourage participation, discussion, and real-world application.
Building Safe Habits
Students learn the importance of working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, how to create and practice an escape plan (EDITH), how to report emergencies, and when and how to safely use a fire extinguisher. Foundational safety skills such as Stop, Drop, and Roll are reinforced, along with identifying common fire hazards found in the home.
Seasonal & Community Safety
As the seasons change, fire and life safety lessons adapt to address seasonal hazards students may encounter throughout the year. Topics include spring and summer safety, outdoor fire prevention, grilling and recreational fire awareness, and ways to help prevent wildfires and forest fires. Students also learn how weather, holidays, and seasonal activities can increase fire risk and what steps they can take to stay safe.
These lessons encourage students to recognize changing risks, practice safe decision-making, and apply what they’ve learned beyond the classroom. By understanding seasonal hazards and prevention strategies, students are better prepared to help protect themselves, their families, and their community year-round.
