Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month: Stay Safe This Season

Last Updated 1/29/2026Posted in Fire News

November is Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month, and the Statesville Fire Department is reminding residents to protect their homes from the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) – a colorless, odorless gas often called the “invisible killer.”

CO can build up when fuel-burning appliances malfunction or aren’t properly vented.

Furnaces, gas stoves, water heaters, fireplaces, and generators can all pose risks, especially as temperatures drop and heating systems run more often.

Free CO Detectors & Safety Checks

To help keep residents safe, the Statesville Fire Department offers:

  • Free carbon monoxide detectors for City of Statesville residents
  • In-home testing of your current CO alarm to ensure it is working properly

To request either service, call 704-832-3876.

Essential CO Safety Tips

State fire officials recommend the following steps to prevent CO emergencies:

  • Install CO alarms on every level of your home and outside sleeping areas
  • Test alarms monthly and replace batteries twice a year
  • Replace CO alarms every 10 years
  • Keep generators outside and at least 20 feet from doors and windows
  • Never run vehicles inside garages
  • Have heating systems and fireplaces inspected annually

Know the symptoms of CO poisoning – headache, dizziness, nausea, and fatigue. If you suspect exposure, get everyone outside immediately and call 911.

Carbon monoxide incidents are preventable. This month, take a few moments to check your alarms and make sure your home is protected. For assistance, the Statesville Fire Department is here to help.
