Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month: Stay Safe This Season
November is Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month, and the Statesville Fire Department is reminding residents to protect their homes from the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) – a colorless, odorless gas often called the “invisible killer.”
CO can build up when fuel-burning appliances malfunction or aren’t properly vented.
Free CO Detectors & Safety Checks
To help keep residents safe, the Statesville Fire Department offers:
- Free carbon monoxide detectors for City of Statesville residents
- In-home testing of your current CO alarm to ensure it is working properly

Essential CO Safety Tips
State fire officials recommend the following steps to prevent CO emergencies:
- Install CO alarms on every level of your home and outside sleeping areas
- Test alarms monthly and replace batteries twice a year
- Replace CO alarms every 10 years
- Keep generators outside and at least 20 feet from doors and windows
- Never run vehicles inside garages
- Have heating systems and fireplaces inspected annually
Know the symptoms of CO poisoning – headache, dizziness, nausea, and fatigue. If you suspect exposure, get everyone outside immediately and call 911.
