2024 Public Safety Academy

The City of Statesville is excited to introduce the inaugural 2024 Public Safety Academy, marking the first time both the Police and Fire Departments join forces to offer this comprehensive program. Building upon the success of the previous Police Academy, this new initiative expands to encompass both public safety services.

The academy is set to begin on Thursday, April 11th, 2024, and will span 9 consecutive weeks until Thursday, June 6th, 2024, concluding with a class graduation. Sessions will be held every Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at different locations, with Police and Fire Department staff taking turns leading each class.

Designed to deepen community understanding of Public Safety functions within the City of Statesville, the academy also offers participants the opportunity to provide valuable feedback, contributing to ongoing efforts to enhance service delivery to the community. With a limited class size of 25 participants, early application is encouraged.

Topics covered throughout the academy will include a diverse range of subjects, spanning both Police and Fire departments.

Police Topics

Administration, patrol, recruiting and training, communications, crime analysis/mapping, community services, School Resource Officers, traffic, criminal investigations, evidence, violent crimes, Special Response Team (SRT), K-9, Crime Reduction Team, drone and camera technology.

Fire Topics

Administration, operations and training, code enforcement + fire investigations, fire education and life safety, CPR/AED hands-on training and information, live fire and extinguisher training, hazmat operations, drone operations, fire rescue (ropes, extrication, confined space), ladder operations, airport rescue firefighting, other specialized fire response demonstrations.

Consideration

Applicants must meet specific criteria to be eligible for the academy:

  • Must be 18 years of age prior to the first meeting.
  • Must agree to sign a waiver.
  • Must reside in Iredell County (with preference given to residents of Statesville.)
  • Must undergoing a criminal history background check.

This inaugural program promises to provide invaluable insights into the vital work of both the Police and Fire Departments, while also opening doors for participants to explore potential career paths within these essential public safety services. Interested individuals are encouraged to apply early, as spaces are limited.
