Seasonal Hazards & Outdoor Safety: Heat, Fireworks & Water Safety

Last Updated 2/19/2026Posted in Fire News, Community Risk Reduction (April - June)

June marks the start of summer - bringing higher temperatures, holiday celebrations, and more time spent outdoors. In Statesville and throughout North Carolina, warmer weather also increases the risk of heat-related illness, water accidents, and fires caused by improper fireworks use.

As part of our Community Risk Reduction efforts, the Statesville Fire Department encourages residents to take a proactive approach to summer safety. A few simple precautions can help prevent emergencies during the busiest outdoor months of the year.

Here are four important safety reminders for June:

Take Extreme Heat Seriously

North Carolina summers can bring high temperatures and humidity that increase the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Protect yourself and others by:

  • Drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
  • Taking breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.
  • Wearing lightweight, light-colored clothing.
  • Avoiding strenuous outdoor activity during peak afternoon heat.
  • Checking on older adults, young children, and neighbors who may be more vulnerable.

Never leave children or pets in parked vehicles - even for a short time. Interior vehicle temperatures can rise rapidly and become life-threatening.

Recognizing early signs of heat-related illness - dizziness, nausea, heavy sweating, or confusion - can prevent serious medical emergencies.

Stay Safe Around Water

As pools, lakes, and recreational water areas become more active, water safety becomes critical.

Water Safety Tips:

  • Always supervise children closely around water - even shallow water.
  • Designate a responsible adult as a “water watcher.”
  • Wear properly fitted life jackets when boating.
  • Avoid swimming alone. Learn basic CPR and rescue techniques.

Drowning can happen quickly and quietly. Constant supervision and preparation are key to prevention.

Celebrate Fireworks Safely

Fireworks are often associated with summer celebrations, especially leading up to Independence Day. However, improper use can result in burns, fires, and serious injuries.

Fireworks Safety Reminders:

  • Follow all local laws regarding fireworks use.
  • Never allow young children to handle fireworks.
  • Keep a bucket of water or hose nearby.
  • Light one firework at a time and move away quickly.
  • Never relight a malfunctioning firework.
  • Dispose of used fireworks by soaking them in water before discarding.

The safest way to enjoy fireworks is by attending a professional public display. View more Fireworks Safety Tips here.

Keep Fire Risks in Mind During Summer Activities

Dry conditions and outdoor gatherings increase the potential for accidental fires.

Reduce Fire Risk by:

  • Fully extinguishing grills and outdoor cooking equipment.
  • Keeping fireworks away from dry grass and wooded areas.
  • Disposing of smoking materials properly.
  • Maintaining clear space around outdoor fire features.

Being mindful of fire hazards protects your home, neighbors, and community spaces.
