Home Heating Fire Prevention Tips

Last Updated 1/27/2026Posted in Fire News

As the temperature drops and cooler weather sets in, heating our homes becomes a top priority. However, it's crucial to be aware that heating equipment is a leading cause of home fires in the United States. The Statesville Fire Department is dedicated to keeping you safe. In this article, we'll highlight some essential safety tips to prevent home heating fires.

Home fires involving heating equipment exhibit a seasonal pattern, with the majority occurring during the colder months. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), municipal fire departments in the US responded to an average of 44,210 home structure fires caused by heating equipment annually between 2016 and 2020. Space heaters were the primary culprits in these fires, responsible for a third of them and most of the associated fatalities and injuries.

Safety Practices to Prevent Home Heating Fires

Maintain a Safe Distance: Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from heating equipment. This includes flammable materials like curtains, blankets, and furniture. Creating a three-foot clearance zone around heaters is a critical safety measure.

Kid-Free Zone: Establish a "kid-free zone" by maintaining a three-foot buffer around home fires and space heaters. Children are naturally curious, and this space ensures their safety.

No Oven Heating: Never use your oven to heat your home. Ovens are designed for cooking and can pose serious hazards if used for heating.

Professional Installation: When installing stationary space heating equipment, water heaters, and central heating systems, always enlist a qualified professional. They should follow local codes and the manufacturer's instructions for safe installation.

Regular Inspections: Schedule annual inspections and cleaning of your heating equipment and chimneys by a qualified professional. This routine maintenance prevents dangerous buildup and ensures efficient and safe operation.

Portable Heater Precautions: Remember to turn off portable heaters when leaving a room or before going to bed. Unattended heaters are a common cause of accidents.

Use the Right Fuel: Always use the fuel type specified by the manufacturer for fuel-burning space heaters. Using the wrong fuel can lead to malfunction and potential danger.

Fireplace Safety: If you have a fireplace, ensure it has a sturdy screen to prevent embers from escaping into the room. Additionally, always wait for ashes to cool before disposing of them.
