Statesville Firefighters Complete NC Aerials Certification Training
Firefighters with the Statesville Fire Department recently completed an NC Aerials Certification course, strengthening their skills in aerial apparatus operations and rescue techniques.
The training was coordinated through Mitchell Community College and the Statesville Fire Department, with instruction provided by Retired Lieutenant Chris Stikeleather and Captain Brian Mitchell. Classroom instruction and practical evolutions were held at Fire Station 1, while advanced setups and driving courses took place throughout the city to give firefighters experience operating aerial apparatus in real-world conditions.
A total of 10 firefighters completed the course, including seven from the Statesville Fire Department and three from the Morganton Fire Department.
Throughout the training, firefighters practiced size-ups, aerial setups, and multi-aerial deployments, which are critical skills when responding to structure fires, rescues, and other emergency situations. The course also covered aerial rescue operations, aerial water operations, preventive maintenance, and detailed apparatus inspections. Firefighters were required to demonstrate proficiency in four state-required skills and complete a written exam as part of the certification process.
Training was conducted using Ladder 1, Ladder 2, and the department’s newly purchased Ladder 5, allowing firefighters to become familiar with each aerial apparatus in the department’s fleet.
Ongoing training ensures firefighters remain prepared to safely and effectively operate specialized equipment when responding to emergencies in the community.
